Plan portable toilets for a Chicago construction site
Use the federal baseline as a starting point, then account for the crew, schedule, site access, existing facilities and provider-confirmed unit configuration.
Calculate the OSHA discussion baselineUse the busiest shift as the starting point
Count the maximum workers present on one shift. Record the number of shifts separately so the provider understands operating hours. The planner does not multiply a peak-shift count by the number of shifts.
| Workers | Minimum facilities in the source table |
|---|---|
| 20 or less | 1 |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
The source rows overlap at 20. This planner applies the first row through 20, the per-40 row for 21–199, and the per-50 row from 200. Counts round up. Seats and urinals do not directly equal portable units.
Turn the table into site questions
The table describes toilet facilities, seats and urinals. Ask the provider how the proposed units supply those facilities; a seat and a urinal may be part of a configuration that needs review. Existing facilities are recorded but are not subtracted automatically.
- Confirm separate-sex requirements, suitable existing facilities and local rules with the responsible safety lead.
- If a mobile crew has readily available transportation to nearby facilities, ask whether the OSHA exception applies; do not assume it does.
- Discuss accessible routes, placement and any constraints on workers reaching facilities.
- Identify contaminants or work conditions requiring washing facilities and obtain the appropriate safety review.
Plan around the working site
Keep pedestrian access practical while maintaining room for service vehicles. Tell the provider about gates, overhead restrictions, work zones, shifts and changing access during the project. Ask how weather, freezing conditions, placement stability and consumables are handled.
Review handwashing station questions. OSHA’s overview explains soap-and-water washing; waterless cleaners do not replace washing where that requirement applies.
Calculate the OSHA discussion baseline and prepare the dates, access and servicing questions together.
Keep the details together.
Chicago Site Sanitation helps customers plan and request portable sanitation service. With your permission, your request may be shared with an independent service provider that can evaluate availability and the job details. A request is not a confirmed booking, price, delivery time, or compliance determination.
